Emergency Callouts — what you're actually buying

What it is

An emergency callout is any out-of-hours attendance to make a roof safe and weathertight in the same session — temporary tarps or membranes on exposed decking, immediate securing of loose ridges and tiles, hard-water diversion where a downpipe or valley has failed catastrophically. Not a permanent repair — a fast stabilisation.

Who it's for

Anyone with active water ingress right now. Anyone whose roof lost tiles or ridge in a named storm. Landlords with a tenant reporting a leak they can't ignore. Home insurers instructing an urgent make-safe pending a full claim.

When you need it

The moment there's water in the house or a tile on the drive. Not the next morning — the sooner temporary weatherproofing is on, the smaller the internal damage bill.

Why it matters

The single biggest cost multiplier on a roof problem is time. Water in a ceiling for one hour costs paint. For 24 hours it costs plasterboard. For a week it costs a rewire, a re-plaster and a redecoration. Fast make-safe caps the damage — and buys you daylight to make good decisions about the permanent repair.

What happens if you leave it

Weather emergencies don't wait for office hours. Every hour a leak runs, the repair bill grows by more than the emergency callout costs.

Ceilings collapse

Plasterboard soaks up water like a sponge. Once it sags, it comes down. That's a full ceiling replacement.

Electrics get involved

Water finds junction boxes, spotlights and consumer units. RCDs trip; if they don't, that's a serious safety issue.

Insulation destroyed

Blown-fibre insulation loses R-value the moment it wets. Even after drying it never recovers fully.

Insurance claim gets harder

If the insurer thinks you didn't 'take reasonable steps' to minimise damage, they can reduce the settlement. Documented emergency make-safe is your defence.

Common mistakes we fix after someone else has been

  • Waiting until morning 'so it's safe to climb up'. It won't be safer, and the damage bill will be four times bigger.
  • Trying to tarp a roof yourself in the dark and rain. UK falls injure and kill hundreds a year — most from domestic ladders in bad weather.
  • Believing 'no one comes out at night'. We do. £250 is the price of not letting the ceiling come down.
  • Booking the permanent repair before understanding what actually failed. Emergency make-safe first, permanent quote in daylight.

Our process

Five steps. Every job. From first WhatsApp to final sign-off.

  1. 1

    Phone call in 5 minutes

Ring or WhatsApp. Confirm address, describe the problem, send a photo if you have one. We give you an ETA on the phone.

  2. 2

On the way as fast as we can

Across Cannock, Hednesford, Rugeley, Lichfield, Burntwood, Stafford, Walsall, Wolverhampton and Telford. Fully lit, fully kitted, fully insured — and honest with you about ETA on named-storm nights.

  3. 3

    Make-safe on the night

Temporary tarp with weighted battens on stripped areas. Split-slate or fresh tile fitted where possible. Damaged ridge secured. Downpipe/valley diversion where relevant.

  4. 4

    Interior mitigation advice

Buckets, moved furniture, drainage points — we tell you what to do inside while the roof is being made safe outside.

  5. 5

    Daylight quote for permanent repair

Next-day photo inspection in daylight. Fixed-price written quote for the permanent fix.

The detail that separates a job that lasts

Emergency response is about limiting damage in the first two hours. Here's what we carry, what we do, and what we don't.

What we carry on emergency call

Heavy-duty tarps (5x8m and 8x12m), timber battens for weighting, roof ladders and hooks, high-visibility lighting rigs, safety harness and edge anchors, matched-profile spare tiles for common Marley and Redland patterns, Code 4 lead offcuts, immediate-set lead-mate sealant.

Named-storm response

Named storms produce clusters of calls. We prioritise active water ingress first (something coming into the house right now), then structural risk (leaning stack, unsecured ridge), then cosmetic damage (tile off, no ingress). Every caller told an honest ETA.

Temporary weatherproofing

Tarp secured with battened edges (not just weighted with bricks — bricks blow off in the same wind that took the tiles). Split-slate or matched tile fitted where possible so the temporary state is closer to permanent. Ridge tiles rebedded with rapid-set mortar where safe.

Interior mitigation

We advise on where to place buckets, how to protect furniture and where to pierce a sagging ceiling to release trapped water controllably (better a hole where you choose than a collapse where you didn't).

What we don't do at 2am

Full re-roofs, chimney rebuilds, or anything requiring proper scaffold. Those are daylight jobs. Emergency service is make-safe, not permanent repair. Anyone offering to do a full rebuild in the middle of a storm should be avoided.

Residential vs commercial

Commercial emergency callouts (shops, offices, warehouses, care homes) — same 24/7 phone number, appropriate access equipment on the way. Insurance-instruction and loss-adjuster work handled routinely.

Straight answers

What does an emergency callout cost?

£250 flat rate — nights, weekends, bank holidays, named storms. Materials for temporary weatherproofing included. Anything above make-safe (permanent repair) is quoted separately.

How fast can you actually get here?

We're Cannock-based, so response times across Cannock, Hednesford, Rugeley and immediately adjacent towns are quick. On named-storm nights we honestly tell you the current queue.

Can I use my insurance?

Yes — we provide time-stamped photos and a written make-safe report for your claim. Many home insurers will refund an emergency make-safe under the 'reasonable steps' clause.

What if the leak is not on the roof itself?

Emergency callout covers roof, chimney, flashings, valleys and gutters. If we find the ingress is a wall or window defect not a roof one, we tell you and refer you to a builder — you still pay the callout because we came out.

Do you carry spare tiles?

We stock common Marley and Redland profiles on the van. Discontinued or specialist tiles come as a permanent-repair job in daylight — we tarp the gap for the night.

Will you climb my roof in a storm?

Only if it's safe. Named-storm active-wind conditions mean roof access is unsafe — in that case we make-safe from ground level (diverting downpipes, sheeting from inside the loft) and access properly once the wind drops.

Do you do out-of-area callouts?

For clients we've worked with before, further afield is possible. First-time customers we prioritise inside the standard Staffordshire service area.

What if the damage looks minor — is it worth calling?

If water is coming into the house, yes. A £250 callout tonight is cheaper than a £2,500 ceiling repair next month. If you're unsure, WhatsApp a photo — we'll tell you honestly whether it can wait.
